GoGirlGo!, created by the Women’s Sports Foundation, uses sports and physical activity to improve the health and wellness of sedentary girls. This award-winning program provides free curriculum that teaches girls about a variety of relevant issues such as bullying, body image, and stress and health risks through the personal experiences of champion athletes. This program encourages these girls to stay healthy, be active, eat right, and to feel good about themselves.
To bring GoGirlGo! to the Southeast Texas Community. Although the curriculum is designed for girls ages 5-18 we propose focus on 5th and 6th grade girls. Studies prove that this is the age group where girls begin to lose interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields and begin to have serious issues with body image and self-esteem. It would be an educational program for girls that meets once a week for 6weeks. They will earn life skills through conversation-based lessons and physical activities and have peer-to-peer and adult-to-youth mentoring opportunities. If possible, at the end of the season, the league would present a program for these girls and other 5th or 6th grade girls in the community called “Girl Power Summit”. The program would help develop leadership skills of 5th and 6th grade girls by promoting self-esteem and confidence, health and nutrition, and the spirit of volunteerism.
This program is in currently in the Research and Development Stage for 2015-2016.
